New Resident Information

Here's a quick overview of the top ten things we at ResNet feel any new on campus resident should know:

  • ResNet does not support 64 Bit operating systems. For a list of network compatible operating systems, please refer to our Software Information page.

  • To connect to the network, your computer must support 10/100 Base-T or compatible Ethernet connections. You must also bring an Ethernet cable. It is recommended that Poly Canyon Village residents use a CAT 6 Ethernet cable to access the wired network connection in their room. All other on campus residents should purchase a CAT 5 or CAT 5e cable to access the network. The cable is commonly referred to as a CAT-5, CAT-5e, or CAT-6 cable. Any of these cable types will be compatible with the residence hall network. The cable's plastic plug is approximately twice as wide as a normal telephone cable's plug. An example of the Ethernet cable plug is shown below.

  • Before you move in, familiarize yourself with network rules and regulations. You can access these by visiting the Policies page.

  • You should understand the responsibilities and potential risks in using P2P programs to download media from the web. P2P Information.

  • Whenever you access the network in your room or residence hall, you will need to log in to an agent called Cisco Clean Access (except for Unix/Linux platforms, which will authenticate through a web browser). You will download and install this agent when you arrive on campus. See the CCA Information section for more information.

  • CalPoly will provide you with Antivirus and Antispyware clients that are compatible with network requirements. You do not need to purchase Antivirus or Antispyware protection. See the Information section for more information.

  • ResNet does not support software labeled “Alpha” or “Beta”. These releases are considered too new and unstable to be allowed on the network and will interfere with your network access.

  • Students are issued one network port through which to access the network. This does not mean that you cannot bring more than one computer to school, just be aware that you only have access to one port from your room.

  • Students are not permitted to use a switch, hub or router to provide themselves with extra internet ports. (Again, please refer to the links on our Policies page.)

  • Many gaming consoles have been able to access the network in the past, however due to network regulations, not all gaming systems or specific games will be able to gain access. This doesn't mean that you can't use a gaming console for networked entertainment purposes, but you should understand that we do NOT provide any support for these types of devices and applications.

  • Educate and protect yourself in the use of digital communities, such as Facebook, Myspace, and Tribes.

  • Please respect other users on the network. The University has placed rules and regulations regarding network usage to protect its users and their access to network resources. Following these rules will help to minimize the number of network outages that may occur during the year and will prevent judicial action being taken against you.
